Why Is the Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working?

Before we can look at the different ways that you can troubleshoot your ice maker, let’s first take a look at some of the reasons why it’s stopped working. Some of the reasons why a Frigidaire ice maker stops working include:

  • An Issue with the Water Valve: The ice maker requires water to make ice. Therefore, if there is a clog in the water valve, chances are that it won’t work.
  • An Issue with the Water Filter: If you notice small ice chips or cubes jamming up the ice maker, then chances are there is a problem with the water filter.
  • An Issue with the Power Cord: Check if the power cable is damaged or has some cuts on it. The ice maker depends on electricity to run. If it doesn’t have access to electricity, it won’t work.
  • There’s enough Ice in the Bins: The countertop Frigidaire ice maker comes installed with advanced sensors that detect when the ice bin is full. If the ice bin is full, the ice maker will automatically if the ice bin is entirely shut off.

Troubleshooting Guide for Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working

Follow the following steps to ensure that you troubleshoot your ice maker:

  • Check whether the Ice Bin is Full: Countertop Frigidaire ice makers have an in-built sensor that lets them sense whether the bin is full or empty. If the bin is full, then the sensor will automatically turn the ice maker off.
  • Check the power cable for any signs of damage: The ice maker depends on electricity to make the ice damaged. The ice maker won’t work if the power cable is damaged.
  • Check the water reservoir: The ice maker relies on water to make ice. If there is no water in the reservoir, then chances are that it won’t continue producing ice as always.
  • Check your water filter: Check whether the water filter is clogged. A clogged water filter will cause the ice maker to slow or act. Fortunately, you can easily replace a water filter without any issues.
  • Check the water valve: Water contains minerals and impurities that might react with your water pipe valve and impede water flow. Or, the low temperatures inside the ice maker could have simply frozen up the water within the valve.

How to Test Your Frigidaire Ice Maker?

All Frigidaire ice makers have a built-in diagnostic mode. To enter into the diagnostic mode, simply hold both the up & down arrows on the control panel at the same time for up to 10 seconds. The ice maker will then enter into test mode.

The ice maker will display several tests using the ‘+’ or make your way through the different tests ‘–‘ buttons. Additionally, for every test, the results will be displayed using the abbreviations “OP” or “SH.”

The abbreviation “OP,” short for Open, will indicate that the ice maker is functioning properly. The abbreviation “SH,” short for Short, will indicate a problem.

How to Reset Your Frigidaire Ice Maker?

There are different models of Frigidaire ice makers.  The ice maker can be either side-mounted, rear-mounted, or a standalone portable ice maker. Nevertheless, the process of resetting the ice maker is pretty much the same, with some minor differences.

With that said, here’s a step-by-step on how to reset a Frigidaire ice maker:

  • Find the On & Off Button: If your ice maker is sid, there is a metal arm above the maker that acts as the on & off switch. If you are using a rear-mounted ice maker, there will be an I/O switch on the side.
  • Turn the Ice Maker Off: For the side-mounted ice maker, simply push the metal arm into the off position. As for the rear-mounted ice maker, simply flip the switch off. The position is indicated by the “O.” If your Frigidaire ice maker has a front panel, simply locate the on & off button and hold it down until the LED light blinks red & goes off.
  • Turn the Ice Maker On: Before you do though, make sure that you leave it off for around 15 to 20 minutes. As stated earlier, depending on the model that you are using, use whatever is available to you to turn it on. Once you turn it on, you will have successfully conducted a hard reset. It’ll fix a majority of issues within the ice maker.

How to Force Your Frigidaire Ice Maker to Cycle?

how to force your frigidaire ice maker to cycle

You can easily force your ice maker to cycle immediately after troubleshooting. To do this, follow the following steps:

  • Empty the Ice Bin: You will first need to take the ice bin out of the ice maker. Once you’ve removed the bin, simply empty the ice in the container & put it back in its place slowly. Don’t use a lot of force.
  • Turn the Gear Clockwise: Now, depending on whichever Frigidaire ice maker model you have, you will either find a gear, a valve, or a button for initiating the cycle. For the gear, you will need to rotate it clockwise to start the cycle. For the button, simply press it until you hear it chime.
  • Fix the Sensor Arm: After you turn the gear, water will start rushing into the ice maker to start the cycle. Additionally, you will notice that the sensor arm/metal arm will start rising. It alerts the ice maker to stop making ice when the bin is full.
