Questions We Asked Addison
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into cooking?
My name is Addison LaBonte and I am a gluten free food blogger, recipe developer and content creator. I grew up in a small coastal town in Maine. I have always really enjoyed being in the kitchen cooking and baking.
Growing up, my family went to my grandparents’ house for dinner every Sunday night. My grandmother is a fabulous cook and makes everything from scratch. She loved teaching me how to cook and her secret tips and tricks.
2. What is your favorite ingredient to work with and why?
My favorite ingredient is chocolate. Chocolate is hands down my favorite food. I eat it several times a day. Chocolate is rich, decadent, creamy and irresistible. It instantly adds a level of sophistication to any recipe.
3. How do you come up with new and innovative recipes?
I rarely come up with new or innovative recipes. Instead, I enjoy making nostalgic recipes gluten free. I will occasionally call my grandmother and ask her for her recipes. Then I will tweak, edit and update as I go. I am also inspired by restaurant dishes and different cuisines from my travels.
4. Can you share any cooking tips or techniques that you think are important for beginners to know?
I encourage bakers and cooks to learn the basic skills first. Find a really great chocolate chip cookie recipe and make it again and again until it becomes second nature. Find a great brownie recipe and repeat the process. Then, tweak and experiment. Cooking and baking does not have to be complicated.
5. What is your favorite kitchen tool or gadget?
I use my air fryer almost every single night. It is a great way to cook meat, potatoes and veggies. Everything is so crispy without the need for frying. I also love my Instant Pot for cooking meat. There is something to be said for a slow cooker dinner on a Sunday night as well.
6. How do you stay organized in the kitchen when preparing multiple dishes at once?
I am a clean freak. I do not do well with a messy kitchen. Unfortunately dirty dishes are inevitable. I like to clean as I go and then immediately clean the dishes.
7. Can you share any insights on how to make a successful food blog?
Consistency is key when it comes to running a successful business. Creating quality content that speaks to your audience is vital. Find out which recipes perform the best and create similar posts. At the end of the day, the blog is not about you and what you want to post. It is about how to best cater to your audience.
8. Can you share any cooking mistakes you’ve made and how you learned from them?
When I first became gluten free, I had to relearn how to bake. Cooking was not too tough. Baking was night and day different. Learning how to bake with gluten free flour was challenging. By taking mental notes and tweaking the recipes, I learned how to make basic cookies and brownies gluten free.
9. What is the most challenging dish you have ever made?
I am still trying to figure out how to make gluten free cinnamon rolls. I have tried over 5 times now. I refuse to settle for good enough. I want the real deal. Gooey, soft, melt in your mouth delicious cinnamon rolls. The kind that my mom makes every Christmas. Still a work in progress!
10. What advice would you give to someone who wants to improve their cooking skills?
You can really only learn by trying. I encourage you to watch the Food Network, find a family member or a friend who loves to cook and learn from them. Then, get in your kitchen and go for it!
